MAKAREVICH Igor

Information

  • Born in 1943 in Trialety, Georgia (USSR), Igor Makarevich lives and works today in Moscow.
  • He attended the Moscow Art School during the years 1955-1962, and the Institute of Cinematography, also in Moscow, from 1962-1968.
  • Makarevich’s work responds to contemporary Russian life and culture, which he believes corrodes individual identity and seeks to efface nonconformist art. In the words of Andrey Monastyrsky, “Makarevich’s work is all about destroying myths – public, personal and aesthetic ones.”
  • His art often takes the form of multifaceted constructions, such as installations or collages.
  • Buratino, the Soviet twin of Pinocchio, frequently appears in Makarevich’s work. The artist’s disturbing perversion of the children’s story character becomes a metaphorical figure for the shared goal of his contemporary official Soviet culture and Russian avant-garde artists: to create and promote an identity for the new Soviet man.
  • Makarevich has exhibited broadly in exhibitions both within and outside of Russia.
  • His work is also included in the collections of many notable museums such as the State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California.
  • The artist has received several recognitions for his work. In 1984, he was awarded the title of “Honored Artist of Russian Republic;” in 1998, he was a recipient of the Civitella Ranieri Center fellowship in Umbria, Italy; and in 1999 he was nominated for the Russian Federation State Award in Visual Arts.
